Know Your Enemy: Recognizing Different Types of Malware

Protecting your computer from cyber threats is very important. And, more cybersecurity threats are out there each and every year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, cybercrime has increased by around six hundred percent.

How many types of malware are there? Dozens, at least. But, some are more common than others.

Read on to learn all about the different types of malware.

Viruses are one of the most widespread types of malware. Basically, viruses are embedded in a file that you would want to download or that appears to be a file that you would want to download.

Once downloaded, it starts embedding itself in other files on your computer, which makes it very difficult to get rid of.

Do you hate popups? Then you'll definitely hate adware. Adware infects your computer and will start throwing up popups even when you're not on pop-up heavy websites.

Adware is annoying, to be clear, but it's probably the least threatening form of malware out there. It basically just bothers you with advertising, and it's relatively simple to clear out.

Ransomware is a form of malware that will take over your computer, lock down your files, and threaten to release your private information if you don't pay the hackers a certain amount of money by a given deadline.

However, just because you pay them the ransom doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get your information back.

To prevent against ransomware, make sure that you always have a backup of your files so you don't end up in a tricky situation.

Worms are also malware that get into your computer through downloaded files, but there's a catch. Worms are self-replicating, so they're very difficult to get rid of.

Worms find their way into programs in your computer system and manipulate them for their own use.

Trojans often appear as fake antivirus programs. Named for the mythical Trojan Horse, trojans trick you into downloading them, and then they infect your computer. Once infected, trojans can wreak havoc on your computer system.

Some of the different types of trojans include backdoor, Cryxos, DDoS, Ransom, Spy, SMS, Downloader, and many others. Because of how many different types of trojans there are, it's best to have a professional take you through to prevent against trojans.

This form of malware monitors your keystrokes, which means the hacker will know every single word that you type in. Spyware may be installed on your computer by someone who is spying on you, personally.

It may also be installed on your computer by someone who will sell your information to advertising agencies, major corporations, and other entities. It also can be difficult to find malware installed on your computer if you don't know that it's there.
