3 New Malware Threats to Put on Your Radar

September 8, 2016

As technology continues to advance, so do the tactics used by hackers to gain access to company networks. Each year, there are reports of new malware threats that are more lethal and often harder to detect than those of the past.

So how can you protect your business's valuable data from being stolen or corrupted by malware? A good first step is to familiarize yourself with the latest threats. To help you do so, our King of Prussia IT security company would like to give you some basic information on three malware forms that have been on the rise recently:

  • Two-faced malware – This type of malware is truly two-faced. It fools network security sandboxes by appearing benign during the analysis phase so that it won't be flagged as dangerous. Once it is released into the network, it begins to perform malicious acts. Worst of all, after it is marked as safe one time, it becomes undetectable in future attacks.
  • Ghostware – Like a ghost, ghostware enters a network, steals data or does whatever else the hacker wants it to do and then disappears from the network without leaving a trail. In turn, this form of malware is extremely hard to detect. However, resulting data loss can be controlled with a well-constructed disaster recovery plan.
  • Compressed file malware – This tactic allows hackers to hide malware within files that appear to be benign. Typically, the malicious code is saved in a format other than ZIP. Because many security solutions are not equipped to detect threats in these alternate file types, they often sneak past without being properly screened. This negligence leads to the file being allowed into the network, where the hidden malware can run rampant.

Being aware of these malware threats and how they work will help you to fight them off should they ever threaten your company's network.
