4 Steps to an Effective Hospital Disaster Recovery Plan

February 10, 2017

According to the Health and Human Services Office of Civil Rights, approximately 112 million healthcare records were lost or compromised in the United States in 2015. This statistic shows that the healthcare industry has a long way to go in terms of protecting patient data, which is concerning considering data loss can render hospitals unable to provide the services we depend on. So what can you do to prevent data loss from affecting your hospital's ability to function? Our Berks County disaster recovery service recommends formulating a disaster recovery plan by following these steps:

  1. Think about the needs of each department – Because every hospital department is responsible for different duties, the priorities of each department in the event of a data loss incident will vary. Therefore, it's important to determine the needs of each individual department in addition to the needs of the hospital as a whole. For instance, consider how much downtime is acceptable for each unit. Some departments, such as the intensive care unit, may not be able to afford more than a few minutes of downtime, so you'll need to formulate a disaster recovery plan that allows these departments to return to full functionality in a short period.
  2. Make a plan that can handle both major and minor disasters – To ensure that your hospital's disaster recovery plan is comprehensive enough to handle anything, you should prepare for both large and small data loss scenarios. To start, determine what needs to be done to deal with the most disastrous events and then gradually move towards everyday issues such as human error. Doing so will guarantee that your hospital has a plan in place to help it recover from mishaps of all sizes.
  3. Incorporate many hospital employees into the plan – A common mistake made by hospitals is to put just a few individuals in charge of carrying out their disaster recovery plans. This can be disastrous if these designated individuals aren't around when a data loss scenario occurs. Therefore, it's best to divide the duties among individuals from every department and make sure all hospital employees are familiar with what the disaster recovery plan entails.
  4. Do a trial run – Once you've finalized your hospital's plan, our disaster recovery service in Berks County highly recommends testing it out by staging a data loss scenario. By doing so, you'll be able to find out whether the plan would be fully effective in a real emergency situation and make any necessary changes.

When you take the time to create a comprehensive disaster recovery plan for your hospital, you'll be able to rest assured that your facility is prepared to bounce back from everything from employee errors to natural disasters.
