5 Crucial IT Security Tips for Small Businesses

September 7, 2017

As a small business owner, you might assume that your company is not at high risk for cyberattacks. No one would possibly target your organization when there are much larger corporations with far more assets out there. Right? Unfortunately not. According to Keeper Security's 2016 State of SMB Cybersecurity Report, half of the 28 million small businesses in the U.S. have been breached by a hacker at some point. To keep your company from suffering the same fate, our service for IT security small business owners can trust offers the following advice:

  • Educate everyone at your company about cybersecurity – No matter how much you spend on your company's IT security infrastructure, you'll still be vulnerable to threats if your employees aren't knowledgeable on basic security practices. To ensure everyone is on the same page, train your employees on how to recognize and prevent attacks. You may also want to establish rules for handling sensitive data and penalties for failure to follow these rules.
  • Keep your machines updated – Aside from having informed employees, one of the best defenses against online threats is up-to-date computers. By installing the latest web browser, operating system and software as soon as they become available, you'll greatly reduce the risk of your organization being affected by a cyberattack.
  • Be cautious about where you back up your data – It's no secret that you should regularly back up your small business' critical data, including electronic customer information, accounts payable files, documents, etc. But before doing so, don't forget to use password protection and encryption technologies so your data cannot be compromised while in storage.
  • Create & enforce a mobile device policy – Allowing your employees to access the company network via their mobile phones may be great for productivity. However, it also means an unauthorized individual may be able to infiltrate the network if a device is stolen or lost. To minimize this threat, require your employees to use security apps and strong, frequently changed passwords. Furthermore, make sure workers know how to report a misplaced or stolen device.
  • Safeguard your organization's Wi-Fi network – Another key step in securing your company's data is to make its Wi-Fi network hidden and encrypted. To do so, password protect the router and set it so that it does not show the network name when people outside of the company try to connect.

With more threats than ever facing small businesses, it's essential to follow these cybersecurity tips at your company in order to avoid falling victim to an online attack.
