5 Steps to Take Before Getting Rid of a Computer

April 5, 2017

Are you looking to do some spring cleaning at your small or medium business? Chances are this will involve getting rid of old or nonfunctional computers. Whether you choose to donate your antiquated company computers to an electronics recycling facility, sell them or trade them in, there is a possibility that someone else may end up using them. With this in mind, our Delaware County IT security service would like to take some time to detail the steps you should take to protect your sensitive information from unauthorized individuals when disposing of a computer:

  • Save all of the files you need and put them on your new computer – An easy and reliable way to do so is with an external hard drive. Or, if you're looking for a virtual backup solution, you can use a cloud service such as Microsoft OneDrive, which offers more than 1 TB of cloud storage space and can be fully integrated with Microsoft Office 365.
  • Be sure to overwrite files after deleting them – It is a common misconception that deleting files makes it so they cannot be retrieved. In reality, files are not truly gone until you overwrite them, so be sure to do this before getting rid of a computer. There are many programs, such as DP Shredder, which make it simple and quick to overwrite your deleted files to ensure that they are gone for good.
  • Uninstall all programs – Because many programs collect personal information such as your name and address, it's a good idea to uninstall all of the programs on your machine before donating, trading or selling it.
  • Get rid of your browsing history – Another security precaution that should be taken before disposing of a computer is to clear your Internet browsing history, as some websites may have your username and password stored.
  • Do a factory reset on your computer – For good measure, our IT security service in Delaware County recommends doing a factory reset on your machine just in case you missed anything. Taking this extra step will give you peace of mind that there is no information left on your computer that can be used by unauthorized individuals to gain information about you or your company.

Once you've completed this checklist, you're officially ready to say goodbye to that old company computer that has been sitting in storage taking up space!
