Creating An Effective IT Disaster Recovery Plan

February 9, 2018

You work tirelessly to meet the goals you've set for your small-to-medium business, so it's important to make sure everything you've achieved is protected in the event that a natural or man-made disaster affects your organization. The best way to do so is by creating a comprehensive IT disaster recovery plan that spells out exactly what needs to be done to protect your valuable assets and keep your business up and running if catastrophe strikes. Here are some guidelines for doing so:

1. Determine how much downtime your business can afford – When writing up your business's IT disaster recovery plan, you should start by running through your organization's list of applications and sorting them into categories based on how quickly they need to be recovered in case of a pandemic. Decide if you need each one immediately or if you can do without it for a certain number of hours. Figuring this out will make it clear which applications you need to prioritize in a disaster scenario.

2. Delegate responsibilities to those who need to be involved – Once you've determined the order in which data needs to be brought back, it's time to assign clear duties to the people who will be responsible for carrying out the disaster recovery process for your business. This will likely include both members of your organization as well as individuals from an IT company, so it's a good idea to include contact information for each person. Furthermore, make the plan as detailed as possible so that everyone knows exactly what they need to do in the event of a disaster.

3. Don't forget about communication – Natural disasters often knock out phone and email, so it's essential to plan an alternate way to stay in contact with your employees, vendors and customers in case normal forms of communication fail. Be sure to devise a strategy for communicating with all necessary individuals both during and after the crisis. For instance, you'll want to prepare a statement to post on your company's website so that customers know what is going on if your business is affected by a disaster.

4. Test your IT disaster recovery plan on a regular basis – To make sure your disaster recovery strategy remains highly effective at bringing your business back from crises, it's crucial to test it frequently. If you find places where the plan needs to be revised, make the necessary modifications and then test the plan again. Repeat this process often to keep your plan as up to date and comprehensive as possible.

Structuring your business's IT disaster recovery plan in this way and testing it often will put you well on your way to keeping your company's data and other assets safe in any scenario. For more ways to give your business data protection against disaster, check out our recent blog post.
