How to Bounce Back from a Data Security Breach

October 20, 2016

So your small or mid-sized company has suffered from a breach to its data security – certainly this issue needs to be taken seriously, but it's not the end of the world. You can get your organization back to conducting business as usual in no time by following these simple steps from our IT security company in Fort Washington:

  • Identify the source/cause of the breach –When data security is compromised, your business's main priority should be to figure out how it happened. There may be clear evidence of what occurred, or you may need to use forensic examination in order to reveal the cause of the breach. Either way, it's important to pinpoint exactly where, when and how the breach took place. Doing so will allow your company to identify the areas of its network that may have been compromised and determine the changes that need to be made to prevent future attacks.
  • Put someone in charge of handling the effects of the breach – Create a post-breach plan of action that includes alerting your employees and any affected customers about what happened and what they should do to prevent further damage. This may include changing their passwords, blocking emails from a certain source, etc. When it comes to telling your associates and customers about the breach, it's best to be completely honest and assume responsibility for the occurrence. Doing so will encourage people to cooperate with your requests and maintain your company's reputation following an incident.
  • Implement technologies and procedures to prevent a recurrence – Once you've successfully contained the threat and instructed your employees and customers on how to move forward, it's time to think about what needs to be done to ward off future breaches of the same type. Strategies may include revamping your security system, training employees on how to identify and eliminate cyber threats, etc. – it all depends on the specific scenario your company is facing.

Don't have the time or skills needed to complete these steps? Not to worry – we do!
