What To Know About WannaCry Ransomware Attacks

June 29, 2017

In recent months, a number of alarming cyberattacks have wreaked havoc on organizations around the world. The effects of these attacks have been highly damaging – several British hospitals were locked out of their computers, German rail systems were disrupted and a Honda plant in Japan was forced to stop production after its network was taken hostage. Shockingly, cybersecurity experts have traced all of these attacks and thousands more back to a single form of ransomware: WannaCry.

At this point in time, the hacking operation behind WannaCry has not yet been dismantled, so our New Castle County IT security service highly recommends that business owners familiarize themselves with how this sophisticated ransomware works and spreads. To get you started, here's some basic information about WannaCry, including how you can prevent an attack at your company:

  • Like any form of ransomware, WannaCry functions by encrypting your files so that you cannot access them without a special decryption method only the hackers can provide. Once your files have been successfully encrypted, a pop-up window will appear on your computer that specifies how much ransom must be paid, usually in bitcoin, to regain access to the system and data. Often, there will be one or more deadlines after which the ransom amount will go up and/or the data will be deleted.
  • Microsoft's Windows operating system has been the main target of the attacks. WannaCry hackers found that they could exploit a National Security Association hacking tool called EternalBlue in order to quickly and easily spread malware between hundreds of thousands of unpatched Microsoft servers.
  • Since WannaCry gains access to systems by taking advantage of security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, the best defense against this type of ransomware is to keep software up to date so that you have all of the latest patches. Another important step is to store protected backups of your important files somewhere separate from your system so that hackers cannot delete them or hold them hostage.
